High Resolution Infrared Imaging and Spectroscopy of the Pistol Nebula: Evidence for Ejection1

چکیده
We present new infrared images, obtained with the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) Near-infrared Camera and Multi-object Spectrometer (NICMOS), and Br-α (4.05 μm) spectroscopy, obtained using CGS4 on UKIRT, of the Pistol Star and its associated nebula. We find strong evidence to support the hypothesis that the Pistol Nebula was ejected from the Pistol Star. The Pa-α (1.87 μm) NICMOS image shows that the nebula completely surrounds the Pistol Star, although the line intensity is much stronger on its northern and western edges. The Br-α CGS4 spectra show the classical ring-like signature of quasi-spherical expansion. The blueshifted emission (Vmax ≈ −60 km s−1) is much weaker than the redshifted emission (Vmax ≈ +10 km s−1), where the velocities are with respect to the velocity of the Pistol Star; further, the redshifted emission spans a very narrow range of velocities, i.e., it appears “flattened” in the Based on observations with the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope, obtained at the Space Telescope Science Institute, which is operated by the Association of Universities for Research in Astronomy, Inc. under NASA contract No. NAS5-26555. متن کامل1 5 Ju n 20 09 High Angular Resolution Imaging Spectroscopy of the Galactic Ultra – Compact H II Region K 3 – 50 A
Gemini North adaptive optics imaging spectroscopy is presented for the Galactic ultra–compact H II (UCH II) region K3–50A. Data were obtained in the K−band using the Near–infrared Integral Field Spectrograph (NIFS) behind the facility adaptive optics module ALTAIR in natural guide star mode. The NIFS data cube reveals a complex spatial morphology across the 0.1 pc scale of the 3 UCH II region. ...
متن کاملHigh-Resolution Imaging of Objects in the Post-AGB to Planetary Nebula Transition
We have obtained high-resolution images of two carbon-rich objects that are undergoing the transition from post-AGB star to planetary nebula: IRAS 21282+5050 (hereafter IRAS 21282), a young planetary nebula, and AFGL 3068, a post-AGB star with a high mass-loss rate. Detailed structure is seen in IRAS 21282. A torus of dust, with its polar axis in the N-S direction, surrounds the central star, i...
متن کاملOptical Imaging of the Motor Cortex in the Brain in Order to Determine the Direction of the Hand Movements Using Functional Near-Infrared Spectroscopy (fNIRS)
Introduction: In recent years, optical imaging has attracted a lot of attention from scholars as a non- aggressive, efficient method for evaluating the activities of the motor cortex in the brain. Functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS (is a tool showing the hemodynamic changes in a cortical area of the brain according to optical principles. The present study has been de...
